Overview

HerFuture HerDecade is an organisation that supports and empowers young women during the critical but tumultuous decade of 18 – 28 years old.
During this decade, young women make decisions that alter their career advancement, economic security, and happiness; at the same time, young women are at considerable risk of sexual assault, gender discrimination, and life-ending violence.
Positive intervention during this critical decade can significantly improve the life outcomes of young women. HerFuture HerDecade aims to provide this positive intervention.
HerFuture HerDecade has four main components:
- National Listening Tour (featuring the voices in the image)
- National Research Survey
- Policy Submission to the Parliament of Australia
- Direct Democracy App
We have completed our National Listening Tour featuring rigorous discourse on gender issues, and voices like Annabel Crabb and Chanel Contos. We have developed our National Research Survey, co-designed with academics at 7 Australian universities, and aiming to ascertain young women’s opinions, experiences, and asks for political change.
Now, we need funding to launch our National Research Survey and collect 20, 000 responses from young women. This will enable us to make a robust policy submission to the Parliament of Australia. Our submission will generate federal policies which improve young women’s lives – removing discrimination, doubt, and violence and promoting happiness, opportunity, and justice. Our submission will also result in the creation of an annual Young Women’s Agenda – meaning state and federal governments focus specifically and regularly on the needs of young women.
HerFuture HerDecade has been co-founded by Rizina Yadav and Malaika Mfula and is supported by a volunteer coalition of 15 impassioned young women.
- Rizina calls Newcastle, NSW home and recently graduated near the top of her class from Stanford University with a B.A. in Philosophy. She has presented work to the UK House of Lords and United Nations, is a UN Millennium Fellow, and has informed Australian healthcare policy.
- Malaika is half-Zambian, half-Australian, and spent the last 2 years working in Dubbo supporting women running businesses. She is now completing her Master’s in International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of Sydney. She was Australian Catholic University’s Alumni of the Year.
So far, we have received 508 thank you emails/messages from young women noting that HerFuture HerDecade has “genuinely changed their lives,” “provided a unique space for raw, impactful discussion about gender,” and made them believe “in their value and worth and leave abusive situations.”

Stretch Goals
Direct Democracy App- $100000.00

HerFuture HerDecade, in consultation with the Stanford Deliberative Democracy Lab and Stanford Computer Science Department, has developed a direct democracy app.
The app will enable young women’s political participation. Whenever governments create policy or initiatives relevant to young women, young women will be informed and able to offer their opinions and experiences. Policymakers will be able to access and use this feedback to create more effective and data-informed policies for young women.
The goal is to increase the impact and effectiveness of Australia’s political system and to integrate representation in every decision that matters. This is integral given polling from around the world showing faith in democracy is at an all-time low; at the same time, government remains one of the most important mechanisms in empowering disadvantaged groups, such as young women.
