Overview
Monash Sustainability Institute reports that every 10 minutes, an estimated 6000 kilos of textiles and clothing are dumped in landfill in Australia. Unfortunately charities are unable to keep up and only achieve a 1% recycling rate for the textiles actually collected. Further household waste of our textile ‘shopping sprees’ make up 3% of household waste, which is on par with our plastic waste. On a global scale the textile industry is estimated to emit 8% of carbon emissions, and 20% of the world’s waste water, a precious resource that exasperates our global water crisis where 780 million people lack basic drinking water access, more than one of every 10 people on the planet.
But.. we love to shop, and we believe we can have it both ways! Consumption and consumer behavior is one aspect of overconsumption that needs to be addressed, the second is how things are made and their life cycle back to the environment. Dechets (French for waste), looks at contributing to the exciting globally renown fashion capital here in Melbourne which is known as “The heart and home of Australian style”, with high-end fashion at its centre. As the Australian has attested “a superlative blend of haute couture and the avant-garde, where the locally sourced innovation of Scanlan Theodore, Alpha60 and Kuwaii lines up with the likes of global fashion houses Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Paul Smith”. Dechets brings our Fashion Capital further into the next century with progressive and daring ‘eco’ sheik, a mix of recycled designs, celebrating recycled and reused clothing; organic and bioeco innovated textiles to advance the Fashion Industry and create a better Impact 4 Good.
With volunteers and 3 key staff, we partner with major charities, leading fashion designers and Australian textile manufacturers to sponsor at the Melbourne’s Fashion Festival as one of their independent curated events.
We are looking to raise $60,000 to pay our key staff, marketing and ongoing costs to showcase Australia’s first ever fully ‘eco’ fashion event curated by Melbourne Fashion Festival in 2022.
85% of all our textile purchases end up in our landfills each year. The environmental impact of this waste is significant: “the clothing and textile industry is depleting non-renewable resources, emitting huge quantities of greenhouses gases and using massive quantities of energy, chemicals and water” and taking advantage of statistically poor and young women and minors.
