Overview

WHAT IS VIOLET & GOLD

In France, ‘sirops’ or syrups are a staple in the family pantry. They are versatile, healthier than most soft drinks and can be enjoyed easily by the entire family.

Violet & Gold create an artisanal range of perfectly balanced syrup mixers that celebrate beautiful Australian botanicals. Think along the lines of Wattleseed, Pineapple & Tasmanian Pepper, or Peppermint Gum – it is the meeting point of traditional French recipes and the oldest botanicals on Earth!

This project is to support us in becoming an even more sustainable business. As we grow, the food waste from our syrup making production also grows and we want to upcycle this to a new range of jams, chutney and relish.

WHAT DO WE DO?

At Violet & Gold, we handcraft our syrup mixers with 100% Australian ingredients and no nasties. Our mission is to celebrate Australian botanicals in a product that is modern, tasty, versatile and easy to use.

In addition to celebrating Australian native botanicals in a range of delicious syrups and mixers, Violet & Gold’s approach is that of sustainability.

Packaging: we use glass bottles that are easily reusable and recyclable. When shipping to our online customers and our stockists, we use paper-based product. We have partnered with a local produce co-op and re-use their bubble wrap. We upcycle the shredded paper from local businesses for our gift boxes.

Banking: we bank with Bank Australia which is a certified B-Corp and doesn’t lend to fossil fuel companies.

Waste: we personally upcycle the food waste from production in our teas and cooking like plain yoghurt with strawberry, white nectarine or pineapple spent. We also compost it to enrich the soil of our personal backyards.

Social impact: we launched a “local backyard growers” program to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations and give back to the community. We purchase our native botanicals from reputable sources and from First Nation growers when we can.

Carbon emissions: we only use fruits, veggies and native botanicals grown in Australia, and mostly grown in NSW. Also, we intend to work with Carbon Positive Australia to offset the carbon emissions from our business trips.

HOW TO USE OUR PRODUCTS

WHO IS BEHIND VIOLET & GOLD?

Bonjour!

I’m Nathalie and I am the French-Australian co-founder of Violet & Gold, currently living on Sydney’s North Shore.

As a child, back in France, my grandma was always making quince paste and quince syrup. When my friend Marie offered me a few quinces, I made a syrup with spices and Tasmanian pepper berries. The result was delicious!

So I kept on experimenting, using traditional French recipes combined with the oldest botanicals on Earth, Australian natives. My friends loved them, so I decided to take on proper training and trained, virtually due to COVID, with a French Agricultural College.

I love native plants, both for their beauty and their unique delicious taste. I named my business after two of them, the native Violet and the Golden wattle, the floral emblem of Australia.

WHAT IS THIS CROWDFUNDING FOR?

As we grow, the food waste from our syrup making production also grows and we want to upcycle its to a new range of jams, chutney and relish.

At the end of our syrup making process, there is food waste, also called “spent”, which is mostly the flesh of the fresh fruits we use. In the past, we’ve been using it for our own consumption over plain yogurt or it went onto our compost pile, to fertilise the plants in our backyard. With the business growing, the waste is also growing.

I was inspired by a flavoured salt that uses the botanical spent from a gin distillery. For Violet & Gold, it could mean a Davidson plum relish, a pineapple & Tasmanian pepper chutney, as well as jams made with strawberry & Tasmanian pepper or White nectarine & strawberry gum.

With your help, we will

  • Consult with a food technologist or a food scientist who will help us design tasty recipes with our production spent.
  • Purchase the initial stock of jars and lids
  • Purchase product labels for the new range

Become a VIP: help us turn our food spent into a delicious range of Australian native jams & relishes and be the first to taste them!
