Did you know that only 1 in 3 Aussie kids between 6-17 years old are frequent readers? This is for both those in native English-speaking backgrounds and those in English as a second language households.

While there are online programs out there focussed on reading, what makes Beyond Books different is that we have elite tutors deliver reading lessons in live and interactive small-group settings.

The in-the-moment interaction keeps students engaged and gets them voicing their ideas with each other. It also allows students to receive prompt feedback to learn quicker.

The human-to-human connection also helps spread the passion of reading and motivates students to excel.

The books we use are also award-winning, spanning multiple genres, so that students are exposed to high-quality writing and different subjects, thought processes and perspectives.

My name is Lucy Huang. In 2019, I was looking for a reading program that would suit my daughter and two of her friends.

It’s been proven over and over again that reading and critical thinking ability are the foundations for a student’s academic and future career success.

More than that, a lifelong love of learning motivates children beyond school and world.

As a parent, I wanted all of this for my daughter.

Yet, I mostly found only tutoring companies that were focussed on specific school academic outcomes, rather than non-academic tutoring companies that were focussed on equipping students with a skill for life. The class sizes were also often too big for my liking.

I ended up having to hire a uni student and renting a room in a community centre for my daughter’s classes – way too many logistical steps, in my opinion!

I have over a decade’s worth of experience in business management in China and over a decade’s worth of experience in the education industry in Australia. I decided to put my expertise to work and so Beyond Books was born!

I founded Beyond Books to help Grade 2-10 students develop not only their reading skills, but also thinking, speaking and writing skills.

Our reading programs use over 200 high-quality award-winning books in different subjects and genres as our textbooks, and use a “read, think, talk and write” methodology to complete the learning process.

• “Read” is the most fundamental skill of all.
• “Think” opens up a student’s vision and perspectives, nurturing their ability to process information and think independently.
• “Talk” helps students develop their speaking, social and leadership skills. We keep class sizes to a maximum of 5-6 students so that every student has a chance to ask and answer questions.
• “Write” improves students’ writing skills as well as the depth of the writing.

In 2020, we started selling our reading programs to the Australian-Chinese community through wechat where parents pay a term-by-term subscription fee – and it was hugely successful. Our 2021 sales doubled and we have a high retention rate of 50%.

Beyond Books started in 2019 with helping 3 children.

Today, we have helped more than 200 students over more than 2000 teaching hours!

Our goal is to help even more by building a better system for our students, parents and operations team, to hire and train more tutors, to improve our course design and tutoring quality and to elevate our marketing and branding.

We will measure our success through higher sales, targeting $1 million by 2023, and through becoming the #1 online education provider for Grade 2-10 students by 2026-7.

Our crowdfunding project goal is to raise $8,000 to contribute towards building a better system. This system will help us manage tutors and their lessons, as well as have a more functional interface for students and parents to use.
